Bossy R: ar

When r comes after a vowel, it is “bossy”: it changes the vowel’s sound. ar says /ar/ as in car.

Let's learn

  1. Read: car, star, farm, park, shark.
  2. Notice the a is not short or long; it says /ar/.
  3. Sort ar words from short a words: cat or cart?
  4. Read: “The shark is in the dark park.”

Watch out for

  • Reading “car” as “cat” with an extra r. Treat ar as one sound unit.

Make it fit your reader

  • Easier: Read one-syllable ar words.
  • Harder: Read two-syllable words: garden, market.

Practice activity

  • Ar hunt: find five ar words around the house or in a book.
  • Picture list: draw a car, a star and a jar and label them.

Tip for grown-ups: Keep practice short and cheerful: 10 to 15 minutes is plenty for young readers. Praise effort, let your child point to the words, and stop while it is still fun.
